My Journey: From Louisiana to New Mexico’s Desert

Dusk in New Mexico.

Artists move to New Mexico for all sorts of reasons. One is the light. Another is the high desert. Another is the graphic shapes of the mountains. I went there for the water. That’s right, the water in New Orleans which was left from the flooding of Hurricane Katrina.

It was very different to me. I came from a hot, humid place were cold weather is a rarity. I moved to a place with varying temperatures and very dry, non-humid air. In the winter the weather turns cold.

The summer’s hot weather starts cooling in October. I had to get used to that. This real change of seasons prompted me to do a picture a day project for a year, I learned so much about photography and myself that my one year project turned into a five year project.

I didn’t just shoot pictures around my home, which is fair game. I looked around the state, I lived in Albuquerque but I didn’t stay there looking for pictures, I looked all over the state except far to the east which is mostly plains.

The one thing that troubles me is returning to New Orleans. I know why I returned, but I should have stayed in New Mexico until I finally moved to Virginia. Maybe I’ll try to answer that as the week rolls on.
